The St. Louis Cardinals have pitching needs. While they may rely on options within their organization, chances are they’ll stay under the radar to close some deals.

That St. Louis Cardinals have many pitching options available through the minor league system, and many are expected to return from the injured list soon.

Zack Thompson made his major league debut Friday as a replacement for Miles Mikolas. He made a save after four innings in the Cardinals’ 14-5 win. He gave up just three hits and one run while striking three and incurring five swings and misses.

Jack Flaherty is expected to start rehab for the Springfield Cardinals on Sunday. The team is still trying to assess the status of Steven Matz’s injury.

On Thursday, Matthew Liberatore was demoted to Memphis after a rough start against the Cubs. Johan Oviedo didn’t look good in a points start on Saturday but managed to eat a couple of innings alongside Jake Woodford. Reliever Andre Pallante looked good starting Saturday night paired with Drew VerHagen.

While all of this youth is great, it can benefit the Cardinals to trade in some outside of the system help to avoid exposing these youth too soon.

Let’s take a look at some unknown names that the Cardinals might be looking at as we get closer to the trading deadline.

Paul Fry, Arizona diamondbacks

Despite a 6.00 ERA, the 29-year-old left-hander has served in 12 games and gone through 12 innings with 12 strikeouts during the season To press.

Fry’s most effective pitch is a slider, followed by a four-seam fastball and a switch. He has amassed 62% ground ball outs this season. This is a trait the Cardinals enjoy as it allows the pitcher to have confidence in the defense behind them. When you have a defense that includes Tommy Edman, Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado infield, you want to capitalize on it.

The slider has an average speed of 84.1 mph with a vertical drop of 42.4 inches and an active spin of 55%.

With TJ McFarland having a string of bad games this season, Fry could be a good candidate for the Cardinals to try and acquire just to bolster their bullpen down the line.
