Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Frankie Montas shone on his return from injury. Here are five teams who should acquire him by the MLB trade deadline.

Before the 2022 season, the Oakland Athletics solidified their status as sellers because of their movements. They traded first baseman Matt Olson to the Atlanta Braves, Sean Manea to the San Diego Padres, and Matt Chapman to the Toronto Blue Jays. One player of commercial value they retained was starting pitcher Frankie Montas.

The right-handed pitcher was long expected to be dealt by the close of trade, but he was recently sidelined with a shoulder infection. But on July 21, Montas returned.

Montas had three innings scoreless against the Detroit Tigers. He knocked out five batters and only allowed two hits. Not to mention that his pitch rate was 98.4 mph.

After that, one has to imagine that the trading shares of Montas are active and rising again. So here are five teams that should try to win it.

5. New York Yankees

That New York Yankees had the best record in the entire American League going into the break and looked like an unstoppable force. But then her return from Los Angeles happened.

They faced their hated rivals in the Houston Astros in a doubleheader on July 21. The Yankees weren’t hit by the team earlier in the year, and they failed to get a win in either game that day. They’re now 2-5 against Houston this year, showing they need to do something to get them over the hump.

New York’s bright spot this season was not just Aaron Judge, but the performance of their entire starting rotation. Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cores, Jameson Taillon, and Jordan Montgomery all have ERAs under 4.00. But they recently lost Luis Severino to a right lat strain.

The Yankees have the prospect of taking some steps by deadline if they want to make a push into the World Series this season, which is arguably their best bet. Expanding their starting rotation should be something General Manager Brian Cashman is considering. That is, of course, if he’s willing to part with some of his young players in the farm system.
