Which teams are struggling to start the 2022 season in week 1? Our pick of college football troubles breaks down the favorites flying red flags.
Excitements don’t care what time of year it is. Sure, teams go into Week 1 of the 2022 college football season with high hopes for what this year might look like, but all it takes is one game to be instantly turned on its head with an upset loss.
Admittedly, trying to predict preseason upsets can be a bit harder than mid-year or even after just a few games. We all assume what we know about these players, these squads and these teams, but the truth is we have yet to see them on the field together in their current form.
But that won’t stop us. We’re taking on the week 1 list starting Thursday and have identified the red flags flying in the winds of brewing surprises. These are college football’s angry picks for Week 1.
Flipped College Football Picks for Week 1: 5 teams are already in excitement
5. Oklahoma State Cowboys
Opponent: Central Michigan | Time: Thursday, September 1, 7 p.m. ET | Distribution: OKST -21
Oklahoma State was yards away from the mullet that possibly got the backyard party into last season’s college football playoffs, and now the Cowboys are coming into the season trying to push them back. Unfortunately, this point might be a little tricky for the Pokes as they welcome the CMU Chippewas to town.
So much of Oklahoma State’s success last season was based on its defense. But now coordinator Jim Knowles is in Ohio State and has taken arguably the best returnee, Tanner McCallister, with him. Additionally, watch a Cowboys offense still led by Spencer Sanders who was never trusted.
Then there’s a veteran team from Central Michigan who have a legitimate star in pushing back Lew Nichols III. Worst-case scenario, the Chippewas cover that three-point spread, but I think they’re really pushing Oklahoma State and possibly picking up an upset win early on.
