PHOENIX (AP) – Five Phoenix police officers were shot and injured after responding to reports of a shooting inside a home early Friday in which four people were shot while trying to bring a The baby arrived safely, Sheriff Jeri Williams said.
A woman at home was also seriously injured, Williams told reporters.
The status of the shooter and other circumstances were not immediately clear, but the police department later said on Twitter that the barricade situation “has been resolved.”
Williams said four of the five injured officers are recovering from gunshot wounds while a fifth is “seriously injured but on the way to recovery.”
The baby was in the house “and at some point was put in a pram and placed outside,” Williams said.
A video on KPNX-TV shows a man walking out of his house with a container, dropping it right outside the front door and then raising his hands in surrender while backing out of the house. The video then showed gunfire as officers approached the doorway.
Sgt. Ann Justus, a spokeswoman for the police department, said the baby was unharmed.
Williams said the first officer to arrive was shot by a suspect and wounded “several times”.
“This is just one more example of the dangers officers face every day to keep us and our communities safe,” Williams said. “If I sound uncomfortable, then I am. This is senseless. It doesn’t have to happen and it just keeps happening over and over again.”
