5 key quotes from the Ben Simmons podcast with JJ Redick

Ben Simmons appeared on Thursday’s JJ Redick podcast. Here are the most important quotes.

Ben Simmons speaks. It’s been a minute.

On Thursday, JJ Redick released a new episode of The old man and the three, the first episode in two months. He came back with a bang, getting Simmons, a former teammate of his, to talk about his journey through the league to this point and everything that’s happened in the last year and a half.

Simmons, once a sixes, now a Net, had a tough last season. After a disastrous performance in a series loss to the Atlanta Hawks In 2021, with Simmons taking on a lot of blame, Simmons filed for a trade. Shortly before the deadline, he was moved to the Brooklyn Networks.

Simmons did not play at all during the season. In Philly, he cited concerns about mental well-being. While preparing to get into game shape in Brooklyn, he injured his back.

Simmons talked about everything from college to today. The whole episode is worth listening to, but if you need the important stuff, we’ve got you covered.

Ben Simmons believes the Nets are vastly superior to the Sixers teams he’s played on

Some shade for the Sixers here! Simmons said this team was far superior to any team he played with in Philly. He specifically cited the team featuring Ersan Ilyasova and JJ Redick, which had won 16 straight regular-season games by the end of the season.

“The talent we have and the type of players we have. We’re going to be able to run the ground easily, you know, we’ve got Clax who can run, he’s moving incredibly well. Kev, Patty, Ky, Joe, just got Royce, another great 3 and D guy. I’m missing people, but this team is just a great fit for what I’m doing and what I’m bringing to the game right now. I feel like Philly on steroids. In relation to what we had when you [J.J.] were there and Ersan.”

This team is significantly more talented than what Simmons was used to. Previously, it was Simmons and Joel Embiid who had to shoulder the burden. Simmons is more able to integrate and complement Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant in this new environment rather than being a focal point.

The most important things to Ben Simmons are sanity and peace

There’s been a lot of talk about how much money Simmons risked last year by showing up for practices and games now. He doesn’t care at all.

‘I’m not shy – for the money. I don’t care about the money. I don’t care about the money now. I want peace and happiness. I want to be in a good place. And that, if it costs me, whatever it costs, that’s what it costs. My peace is more valuable than money.”

However, that doesn’t mean Simmons won’t at least try to recover some of that money:

Ben Simmons wouldn’t do it any differently

After the turmoil that Simmons has endured over the past year and a half, most would expect him to want to completely rewrite the screenplay should the opportunity arise. Not the case:

“No, because I wouldn’t be here. I don’t think you could say, ‘Yeah, I wish I’d gone up and dunked the ball’ because that was the whole game. how come No, I think if I hadn’t gone through what I’ve been through for the last year and a half, I wouldn’t be where I am now. And I think I had to go through all of that and have those experiences to be where I am now.”

Simmons certainly sounds ready to write that next chapter, but what happened? It’s in the past. Clearly.

Ben Simmons called out Shaq

simmons had harsh words for commentators, notably Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley.

Here’s what he had to say about O’Neal:

“I texted him and I was like, ‘Why are you saying that if you don’t even know the story?’ Because he always wants to say like you, we’re LSU brothers, you’re my brother, all this, that. If you were my LSU brother, you would have gotten in touch by now, and it’s been months since I’ve addressed it . Not once did you reach out and say, “Hey, are you alright? Like, what’s up.’”

Ben Simmons is looking forward to playing for the Nets and here is his take on 3 point play

Ben Simmons sounds like he’s in one Great Headspace is entering the season.

“It’s getting sick. I can barely wait for it. I’m so excited, changed my number, got a new number, new shirt, just looking forward to it. I think you know we have a special team. I think if we get everything together we will be champions. So that’s the end goal. If you want to make a comeback, put on the jersey, feel free. But yeah I’m excited, it’s New York City, you know I’m playing with some incredible players.”

simmons also mentioned that he will shoot in threes. He joked that he would shoot five a game even if Durant was wide open. you like to hear it

It all adds up to the Nets being one of the most talented teams in the league, of course, but that’s easier said than done. The Nets rarely saw Irving, Durant and Harden on the floor together when they were teammates. Durant is cordial with the team for now, but will it stay that way?

It remains to be seen. At least the Nets know Simmons is locked up.
