4 key takeaways from Klopp’s pre-Villa press conference – Gerrard’s injury chat and news – Liverpool FC

Jurgen Klopp faces a barrage of questions about Steven Gerrard ahead of Liverpool’s upcoming clash with Aston Villa, while providing mixed injury news from his team.

Here are four key takeaways from Klopp’s pre-Villa press conference…

Gerrard standing in the middle of the field

Unsurprisingly, Gerrard’s return to Anfield – for the first time as an opposition player or coach – was the main focus of journalists ahead of Saturday.

Klopp joked before the press conference that he would “not answer any questions about Steven Gerrard today,” well aware of what was to come.

The manager has spoken well of Gerrard’s career so far, his influence at Villa and the reception he can expect at Anfield, but perhaps most interestingly, he also introduced him. It’s for the Liverpool job.

“Yes, I think that is bound to happen,” he said. “And good for everyone!”

However, he warned Gerrard against jumping into the role before he was ready, using Frank Lampard’s failure at Chelsea as a prime example.

Mixed news on Divock and Diogo

Klopp welcomes Roberto Firmino back to training on Thursday, and although the Brazilian is unlikely to feature against Villa after a lengthy lay-off, it is positive news for the Red Devils.

However, the manager faced a difficult decision for Saturday, with question marks over his health. Diogo Jota.

Jota and Divock Origi both missed midweek training, although Klopp is more optimistic about the latter’s readiness, having simply been given another day of rehabilitation.

“Diogo felt something after the last time Premier League he talks about Jota.

“We’ll see, maybe he can train today, then he’s an option. If not, then no. ”

Bad news for Nat

A player who is sure to be eliminated is Nat Phillips, who broke his cheekbone in the first game of the season against AC Milan.

“It’s not as bad as it could have been,” said Klopp.

“So there’s no need for surgery and he can pretty much train from next week, but ease off because of anything hitting him in the face that can cause proper damage.”

Liverpool expect Phillips to be sidelined for around four to five weeks, which means he has played his last game for the club, with a move in January.

Compliments for Fabinho

Klopp was relieved when the subject turned, albeit briefly, from Gerrard to one of his own players, with the manager being asked about the importance of Fabinho.

“Everybody wants Fabinho on his team,” he said.

“Especially after a day working with him, you definitely want him on your team.”

The manager added: “He’s a top, top, top, top, top player who will hopefully be a very long time at this club and hopefully very well at the weekend.”
