These three Chicago White Sox free agents will not be returning for the 2023 season.

That Chicago White Sox have a solid core that is both a blessing and a curse. The good thing is that they should go into next season with a strong team. On the negative side, this season they haven’t played with the high expectations that many of us had for them at the beginning of the year.

Chicago’s downfall in 2022 is tied to injuries, some odd managerial decisions and underperformance by many of its players. The offseason could get active for Chicago as they try to allay their concerns from this year.

There are a few White Sox free agents that we can already expect to leave. It’s these three who are most likely to part ways with the team.

1. White Sox only needed Johnny Cueto temporarily

Who would have thought Johnny Cueto had so much left in the tank? One of the team’s most consistent pitchers this season was only given a one-year contract that, due to a couple of injuries, seemed like nothing more than a pitching opportunity.

Cueto eventually went above and beyond his call of duty. At the age of 36, he enjoyed a bit of a renaissance that season with the White Sox. It may have been his last chance to show the league he had something left. Obviously he does.

Does Cueto fit what the White Sox will need next year? It’s a bit like trying to do the same magic trick to the audience twice in one show. He’ll be a year older, a few more innings in his career, and the risk might be too great.

The White Sox already have a lot of other guys signed and room for bigger upgrades to sign for multiple seasons. Cueto remains someone who would be best suited to a team with just a one-year contract. His time with the San Francisco Giants wasn’t strong enough to warrant a long-term contract.

If the White Sox are serious about winning, any free agent starting pitchers they add to the club have to be better and younger than Cueto.
