Watch Phillies’ Alec Bohm portray the antithesis of a field clinic
The Toronto Blue Jays earned a shutout win over the Yankees in the Bronx Monday night, but it wouldn’t have happened without flashing the leather.
Shouldering high expectations this season, the Toronto Blue Jays kicked off the week with a trip to the Bronx to take on the New York Yankees in hopes of making a statement early in the season.
Thanks to a great season debut from Alex Manoah, a 2-run home run from George Springer and an RBI double from Springer for insurance, the Blue Jays were able to do just that as they headed into Yankee Stadium and the pinstriped men faded out for 3rd place :0 victory and improve their tally to a solid 3:1 to start the season.
However, they could not have achieved victory if several web jewels had not kept the momentum of the game on their side at key moments.
Blue Jays: Web Jewels win shutout victory over Yankees
For starters, as the Yankees threatened to score late in the third inning, shortstop Bo Bichette made a fantastic stop and throw to clear Toronto out of a jam and maintain the two-run advantage.
Later in the proceedings, New York had men back on the grassroots paths and was looking for a big hit. A foul ball threatened to fall into flat right field until Teoscar Hernandez sprinted and slid in to make a fantastic grab that helped avoid damage.
In the same inning, Bichette showed up once more as he and Santiago Espinal connected in a beautiful double play that was cut short by an absolute laser from Bichette to get the runner first.
We know what Bichette, Hernandez, Springer, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the rest of the cast are capable of when they’re at the plate. But if the Blue Jays play defense like this all season, they will surely earn the label of World Series contender from the American League.
