The Kansas City Chiefs will have one of the toughest game schedules in the NFL this coming season.
If the Kansas City Chiefs are to play well into the postseason, they must first navigate an incredibly difficult regular season schedule.
Even though the AFC West is up against the NFC West entirely this season, the NFL didn’t do the Chiefs any favors by taking first place. While pulling the AFC South into their in-conference rotation is helpful, bringing in the Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers as part of the competitive balance portion of the schedule doesn’t make things the least bit easy.
Here are three times the NFL decided to make it even harder for the Chiefs.
Kansas City Chiefs: 3 times the NFL didn’t do them any favors
3. Week 7: at the San Francisco 49ers (Sunday, October 23)
There’s no way around it. The Chiefs’ first eight games are absolutely brutal. They become the first team in NFL history whose first eight opponents finished the year over .500. The “worst” teams they play against in this segment are the Indianapolis Colts and the Los Angeles Chargers, both of whom missed the playoffs with 9-8 records. At least the Chiefs have a bye in Week 8.
The last game the Chiefs play before the reunion is in Week 7 at the San Francisco 49ers. While San Francisco is one of only a few teams to offer great variance this season, it would be more shocking than not if they fell off a cliff. The 49ers could roll over Jimmy Garoppolo with Trey Lance as starting quarterback, but they still employ Kyle Shanahan as head coach.
After an immensely difficult first six games of the season, the Chiefs will have to travel to the Bay Area to take on this Super Bowl contender from the NFC West. Keep in mind that this game takes place the week after the AFC Divisional Round Barnburner rematch between the Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead. With bye week on the horizon, this week 7 affair feels like a prime game of disappointment.
A bye-week defeat leaves a bitter taste in Chiefs Kingdom’s mouth.
