Xander Bogaerts is a Red Sox icon, but his time in Boston may be coming to an end. Losing the Red Sox would be a massive win for any team that signs them

The Boston Red Sox’s recent hot streak helped push aside a question that threatened to overwhelm their season: what’s the future of Xander Bogaerts In Boston?

Bogaerts signed a six-year, $120 million contract extension with the Red Sox in April 2019. However, it included an important clause, which was that Bogaerts could pull out of the deal and test free agency after this season. He’s making $20 million a year over the course of the deal, but he’s seen shortstops like Corey Seager and Carlos Correa sign huge deals in excess of $30 million. Bogaerts wants that much money, and the Red Sox may not be able to give it to him.

The Red Sox’s slow start to this season sparked rumors that they were considering trading Bogaerts before he could sign off. On May 8, with the Red Sox losing their fifth straight game to fall back to the 10-19 year and already 10 games away from the AL East lead, Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom caught those rumors and reiterated that it was too early to panic.

“We have to play better. We put ourselves in this situation. But if we can get out of there, we’ll get out by doing the things we know we’re good at. There’s a difference between urgency and panic,” Bloom said MassLive.com back then.

The Red Sox responded. The club has since gone 10-4, the best record in the American League. Trevor storywho signed a $140 million deal with Boston in the offseason and was forced to move to second base due to the presence of Bogaerts, has suddenly shown he’s got his money’s worth with six home runs and 17 RBI in his last six games was worth.

The return to competition has stifled talk of Bogaerts’ move, but that doesn’t mean the franchise icon will still be around in 2023. Bogaerts is fast approaching Everett Scott’s franchise record for games played by a shortstop. He has more hits and homers than any Red Sox shortstop except Nomar Garciaparra; only Garciaparra and Joe Cronin have more RBI.

Bogaerts is the only link between generations of great Red Sox teams. He won the World Series with David Ortiz and Mookie Betts. He was the only Red Sox player to appear in both the 2013 and 2018 World Series. Since debuting in 2013 as a 20-year-old, the Aruba native has carved his name into legends of Red Sox history.

That could end after this season if the Red Sox don’t give him the money he thinks he deserves. If Bogaerts decides to leave Boston, these three teams are waiting to catch him.
