3 stats prove Tony La Russa could be fired at any moment

The Chicago White Sox were playing better ahead of the All-Star Break, but manager Tony La Russa is far from out of the woods.

La Russas All players say the right things – that they are responsible for the product on the field, not their Hall of Fame manager. And while that may be true up to a point, La Russa has cost his team several games this year alone with odd decisions.

That deserves some kind of retribution.

The likes of Joe Girardi and Charlie Montoyo were fired for less, while the Angels’ Joe Maddon was canned amid a record losing streak. But despite “Fire Tony” chants, which can certainly be heard from the owner’s box, Jerry Reinsdorf will not let go of La Russa.

But he shouldn’t get too comfortable.

White Sox: Tony La Russa still in the hot seat

Until the season is over, La Russa knows he can’t get too comfortable. It is not without reason that the 77-year-old skipper has a fixed-term contract.

Multiple stats show in particular how inept the La Russa team has been this season:

  1. They saved 4 defensive runs, 21st in MLB and 29th in fielding odds.
  2. They made the third most outs on bases
  3. Their home record is a dismal 19-25

There are other positional metrics that look pretty bad as well, including Team ERA, OPS vs righties, and more, but I chose these three stats because they generally reflect how well trained a team is.

Defensively, Chicago was nowhere near a playoff contender and ranks at the bottom of the league. The best teams in the AL don’t have this problem.

Making outs on the basepaths is also inexcusable, and for such a supposedly solid hand, players don’t seem too scared of making critical mistakes after they’ve already reached base. Chicago needs runs!

The home record, while brutal, speaks more to the product that fans have seen with their own eyes this season. No wonder they want La Russa gone.

Maybe a turnaround in the second half can change everything, but right now there’s still drama brewing on Chicago’s south side.
