Expect these three Red Sox players to be gone from the roster by September 1.
At the close of trading, the Boston Red Sox bought, they sold, and they stayed with what they had. It was a record with everything possible. Actually alive in the American League Wild Card Racingit is very unlikely that they will put on a wonderful run late in the season.
Between now and September 1, we can still expect the Red Sox to do some unexpected things. Who made them grab Eric Hosmer at the close of business?
Not so unexpectedly, these three players will lose their squad spots. Expect these three to be in the roster bubble for the Red Sox by September 1.
1) Red Sox roster doesn’t need Yolmer Sanchez
Yolmer Sanchez doesn’t offer the Red Sox much more than an infield option. He’s a 30-year-old journeyman capable of playing multiple positions in the dirt and his time in Boston is dangerously close to the end. He didn’t take the chances he got this year. Until then it is only a matter of time He joins Jackie Bradley Jr. as the next Red Sox player to be selected for assignment.
Players like Sanchez can gain more playing time. Boston could certainly use a bench player like him in the roster. However, with an overwhelming start to his career with the Red Sox, they’re probably just waiting for a better pick.
Sanchez has no minor league options so he would have to be DFA to remove him from the 26-man roster. The only thing he can do is strike before this happens. Given his resume, this is unlikely to happen.
