3 QBs That Look Like Steals After The Russell-Wilson Deal

The Denver Broncos renewed Russell Wilson to keep him in Denver through 2026. While it’s exciting news for Broncos country, it also makes some other QB deals look like steals.

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson will ride in style after its new renewal. The five-year contract, valued at $245 million, is the third-highest overall price for a QB in the NFL and makes him the second-highest-paid quarterback per average annual value.

Wilson’s NFL resume is adorned with nine Pro Bowls and one Super Bowl title, but the deal he just agreed came through without a single snap for his new team. An extension that will have financial implications for the Broncos’ near-term future is creating some pressure on the Wilson and Denver front offices.

Every penny of extra time is based on projections, so Russell Wilson – who is playing in his 33-year season – has high expectations to live up to. Additionally, the reputation of the Broncos’ new owner is on the line as this deal marks their first notable move since buying the team.

Broncos Country has a lot to look forward to with the high-profile spending made this offseason. Wilson’s Monster expansion is included, but the impact it will have on the organization’s near future begs the question, “What if it doesn’t work out?”

Regardless of how the next five years play out for the Broncos and Russell Wilson, the quarterback market’s near reset with an aging veteran offers some interesting comparisons. Here are three quarterbacks whose contracts look like absolute bargains in this context.

1.Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahome’s 10-year, $450 million extension in 2020 made him the highest-paid soccer player in history. His total contract value is the largest in the league to date. The Kansas City Chiefs redefined the quarterback market with their gargantuan bid for Mahomes, and the Broncos’ new deal with Wilson is just the latest domino to fall into the pattern of high-dollar deals that have followed. Unfortunately for Denver, their deal with Wilson and the immediate successes and/or failures they have are directly compared to the Chiefs’ as AFC West rivals.

While Wilson’s deal is worth about $4 million more a year than Mahomes’s, what makes Mahomes’ deal look like a steal in comparison is his recent success. The Chiefs have been in a luxurious position in that they’ve been able to set the bar for the overall value of a generationally talented quarterback in today’s game, and since offering Patrick Mahomes his deal, they’ve enjoyed winning doggedly.

Russell Wilson’s Broncos renewals make some other QB contracts look cheap

While Kansas City is currently going through its first major Mahomes-era rebuild, expectations for success remain the same. The Broncos have now placed value on Russell Wilson that will directly impact their spending over the next half decade — a time when the organization hopes to win again.

Given the difference between the Chiefs’ and Broncos’ current trajectories, Patrick Mahomes — and the immediate gratification that came from being paid — makes Kansas City cost less than Russell Wilson make the Mahomes contract seem as lucrative as any.
