The Atlanta Braves players on this 40-man list are the ones most likely to be assigned to the mission before Opening Day.

The Atlanta Braves don’t seem to want to put emotions first when making roster decisions. They let all their free agents go, except for Eddie Rosario. Even Freddie Freeman, the face of the franchise, skipped this season.

So when it comes to the final roster roundup in 2022, don’t expect the Braves to make anything but the best possible decisions for their team.

Like the rest of Major League Baseball, the Braves will have a 28-man roster at the start of the year. However, the 40-man squad size remains the same, meaning that before Opening Day there could be some cuts. In fact, we should expect it. These three members of the current 40 roster will be the ones most likely to be appointed to take on the task and possibly end their time with the franchise.

Sean Newcomb may be the most recognizable Braves player to get a DFA treatment before Opening Day

Chosen in 2014 by the Los Angeles Angels, Sean Newcomb was once a rising young pitcher in the Braves’ starting rotation. After two such seasons, he has spent his last three appearances with a sigh of relief. Last season’s 4.73 ERA in 32.1 runs was not the promising result they expected.

Control has been an issue for Newcomb. He walked an average of 4.8 times every nine and saw the number increase to 7.5 times every nine last year. He’s dropped so much over the past few seasons and with no minor league picks left, he’s likely to fall victim to the Braves roster.

The Braves had a lot of left-handed picks in their bullpen. Will Smith, Tyler Matzek and AJ Minter are the top three. Essentially, Newcomb is fighting alongside Tucker Davidson for a long-term relief role. Also a left-handed saver, Davidson has the edge over Newcomb for two reasons. One is a minor league pick the other. The rest is the salary before the referee.

The Braves were hesitant to pay some of their players even to have Richard Rodriguez become an uninvited player before the MLB closed.

Newcomb’s growth seems to have passed. Maybe it’s time to inject someone else. 3 DFA candidates could lose their place in the 40-man squad
