3 deals to replace Carlos Correa

After losing Carlos Correa, here are three commercial targets for the Houston Astros to replace him.

It all seems likely, but the Houston Astros have officially lost their lead Carlos Correa. The person who reigned twice All-Star and AL Gold Glover was joined the Minnesota Twins on a three-year, $105.3 million deal. The fact that Correa signed elsewhere was not a shock it was who he signed. No one saw Minnesota coming.

As the Astros are currently looking to replace Correa, there is one free agent option that stands above the rest – Trevor’s Story. Rumor tie him to Twinsironically, but now he’s clearly the #1 free agent (and one of the top players in any position) available.

But if the Astros aren’t willing to pay Correa, there’s a reason they might not be willing to do so with Story even on a short-term contract because other teams want to push the price up as well. So the transition to the commercial market may be underway, and the key is timing when a shortened spring training session is underway and Opening Day is approaching.

Here are three trade targets for the Astros to try to fill in the big gap in the short.

3. Kevin Newman, Pittsburgh Pirates

Newman could potentially spend on Pirates with top prospect Oneil Cruz possibly ready to take over, and The Athletic’s Rob Biertempfel (registration required) was suggested back in January, he will be available when the lockout is over.

Newman recently had a difficult attack, with a .226 / .268 / .302 slashes more than 726 appearances over the past two seasons combined. But he hit .308 with 12 home runs, 64 RBIs, 16 stolen facilities and .800 OPS over 130 games in 2019, and bad luck seems to have been a factor in recent struggles his (.250 BABIP in 2020, .236 BABIP in 2021, according to Baseball Reference). Based on his .333 BABIP in 2019, somewhere better than two years ago but not quite for that season is confusingly like his baseline.

Newman has made strides defensively into 2021, posting a 1.3 dWAR (via Baseball Reference). He also suffered from cost controls for years, just in his first year as a referee this year.
