The Pittsburgh Steelers enter the 2022 season with big offense changes, but what will the results be like on the field? We have some bold predictions.
Ben RothlisbergerGiven the quarterback’s performance on the field, his retirement might have been due, but it’s impossible to deny that Pittsburgh Steelers are entering uncharted territory under head coach Mike Tomlin as they venture into the 2022 season.
The franchise drafted the accepted Big Ben replacement in the first round with the selection of Pitt’s Kenny Pickett. They also signed former No. 2 pick Mitch Trubisky to help the cause. That defense remains impressive, as do the ability position players, but there are holes in the linebacker, and particularly the offensive line, that come with the quarterback’s insecurity.
So what will this season look like in the Steel City? Rather than keep things tame, let’s get bold as we make some predictions for the Steelers in the 2022 season.
3. Steeler’s bold prediction: Kenny Pickett starts most games in QB
The preseason saw heated competition between rookie Kenny Pickett, Trubisky and veteran former third-rounder Mason Rudolph for the starting quarterback job. For the past few weeks, it’s been looking like it’ll be a two-man race between Pickett and Trubisky as the team is reportedly investigating one possible trade with Rudolph.
While the starter has yet to be announced, the safe money rests with Trubisky as a Week 1 starter. While his time in Chicago has been much maligned, the fact of the matter is that his veteran experience combined with his mobility should make the difference at the Steelers in prime position to win straight out of goal while Pickett learns the ropes.
But the truth is we know what Trubisky is and while he has physical tools, the ultimate results just weren’t there for him. And when that happens in Pittsburgh, the calls for Pickett to take the starting job will be too loud for Tomlin or anyone else to ignore.
As such, the rookie will take over as QB1 sometime around the quarter mark of the regular season and will not quit the job. Make no mistake, this decision will not eliminate growing pains and the results will almost certainly be very different. With that in mind, the team will begin to usher in the future in this position sooner rather than later.
