A year ago, the New Orleans Saints started strong. Despite a solid finish, the team would miss the playoffs. And this year there could be some surprises.
The last two offseasons for the Big Easy team have been nothing short of memorable. After a stellar career with the franchise, quarterback Drew Brees retired from football following the 2020 season. Last season, the Saints finished 9-8 and were eliminated from the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Also absent was head coach Sean Payton, who also chose to step down from the game after 16 seasons (and a Super Bowl title in 2009) as the team’s auxiliary line manager.
The new head coach is promoted to defense coordinator Dennis Allen, who once spent 36 games as the Raiders touchline captain. That didn’t go too well, as the team finished with an 8-28 record under his leadership. But this is a completely different team and organization. So what can we expect from the Crescent City club in 2022?
3. WR Jarvis Landry has over 100 receptions
He turned to the trick twice in his early days in the NFL, both during his time with the Dolphins. Prolific wide receiver Jarvis Landry is a five-time Pro Bowler who began his career in 2014 as the draft choice in Miami’s second round. He finished his South Florida career with 400 receptions (22 touchdowns) before being dealt to the Cleveland Browns in ’18.
His numbers weren’t nearly as impressive as they were when he was with the ‘Fins’. In four seasons with the Browns, there were 288 grabs, 15 for scores. Part of that decline had to do with a shortened 2021 season due to injury, which saw Landry finish with career lows in games played (12), goals (87), catches (52), receiving yards (570), and touchdown receptions (2). .
The eight-year veteran was released by the Browns this offseason. The former LSU product and Louisiana native is primed for a year of recovery. He will lead the team on catches and make life easier former All-Pro Michael Thomas and newcomer Chris Olave.
