2023 Toyota GR86: entry-level misses blind spot, rear cross-traffic

Buyers of the entry-level Toyota GR86 will miss out on the active safety features offered across the Subaru BRZ range in Australia.

The GR86 GT doesn’t have blind spot monitoring or a rear cross-traffic alert on touchdown, with Toyota opting to reserve it for the pricier GR86 GTS instead.

Subaru offers blind spot and cross traffic alerts across the BRZ range. BRZ and GR86 are built in the same Fuji Heavy Industries factory and are mechanically almost identical.

Manual versions of the GR86 forgo autonomous emergency braking and lane departure warning, whichever spec you choose, as is the case with the BRZ.

Standard features of the GR86 GT include:

Pricing has not yet been announced but will be in line with the September launch of the car. The Subaru BRZ starts at $40,290 pre-street and extends to $45,390 pre-street.

In the previous generation, the BRZ was priced above the equivalent 86, but offered more equipment as standard. Toyota says it’s focusing on affordability again with the GR86, suggesting it could undercut its Subaru twin.

Power in the GR86 comes from a naturally aspirated 2.4-litre flat-four engine.

Although related to the engine used in the seven-seat Subaru Ascent sold in the US, it ditches the turbocharger and inherits the Toyota-developed D4-S port and direct injection system that debuted in the first-generation model.

Peak power is 174 kW (at 7000 rpm) and maximum torque is 249 Nm (at 3700 rpm), 22 kW or 37 Nm more than the old car.

Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter automatic. The manual has revised gear ratios, the automatic has been updated to shift faster.
