2023 Masters Picks, Odds, Field: Surprising PGA predictions from an advanced golf model that hit 8 majors

Few events in the golf program generate as much excitement as the Masters, which kicks off the schedule for the major championships on Thursday. Scottie Scheffler is hoping to become the fourth golfer in history to successfully defend his green jacket after beating Rory McIlroy last year. Caesars Sportsbook has Scheffler as a 13-2 favorite at the 2023 Masters odds, while McIlroy is at 15-2 and Jon Rahm at 8-1. Other contenders for the 2023 Masters include Cameron Smith (14-1), Jordan Spieth (14-1) and Justin Thomas (15-1).

McIlroy has been trying to finish the career grand slam for nine years and has so far failed to get the job done at Augusta National Golf Club. He’s finished in the top 10 six times, but he’s shot worse than par in four consecutive opening rounds before coming to Masters 2023, using SportsLine’s proven computer model.

SportsLine’s proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model has gained over $8,600 on its best bets since the reboot, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure’s model predicted that Rahm would finish at the top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. The model also included JT Poston in his best bets to win the 2022 John Deere Classic. That bet reached +5500, and for the entire tournament, McClure’s best bets brought in almost $1,100. At last year’s Masters, McClure’s model throughout was Scheffler’s first major championship win of his career heading into the weekend.

Additionally, among McClure’s best bets was Collin Morikawa’s overall win at the 2021 Open Championship, despite being listed as a massive 40-1 long shot. The model was also featured throughout Rahm’s (10-1) career first major championship win at the 2021 US Open. Rahm was two strokes away from the lead going into the weekend, but the model still predicted him as the winner.

The same model also nailed a whopping eight majors over the weekend. Everyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2023 Masters field is taking shape, SportsLine has simulated the tournament 10,000 times and the results have been surprising. Now go to SportsLine to see the projected leaderboard.

Top predictions for the Masters 2023

One big surprise awaiting the model at the 2023 Masters: Cameron Smith, a six-time PGA Tour champion and one of the top favorites at the 2023 Masters, doesn’t even stumble and crack the top 10. Smith is the defending Open champion and claimed late an event in Australia last year but it’s been a rough road for him since then. He finished 47th at his last event in 2022 before missing the cut at his first event in 2023, the only competitive golf he’s played in the past three months.

Despite Smith’s success on the PGA Tour last season, it wasn’t his best year in terms of metrics, which could indicate he was on the right side of luck. He ranked outside the top 100 in driving distance and driving accuracy percentage, while ranking only 136th on the Tour for the important shots he hit from the tee (-.125). With those struggles and just one cut missed for his 2023 events, the model is avoiding Smith at his current Masters 2023 betting odds.

Another surprise: Jason Day, a 25-1 longshot, makes a strong run to the title. He has a much better chance of winning than his odds suggest, so he’s a target for anyone looking for a big payday. Day qualified for the 2023 Masters when he broke into the top 50 in the official golf world rankings on March 27 after previously failing to qualify for the tournament.

His late arrival means he’s in strong form at the right time, recording 11 top-25 finishes in his 13 tournaments this season. Day finished in the top 10 in six of those events, including a fifth-place finish in the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play event two weeks ago. He finished second at the 2011 Masters and has four top-10 finishes, including a tie in fifth place in 2019, so he has the experience to win in Augusta. See who else you can pick here.

How to make 2023 Masters picks

The model also targets three other golfers at odds of 20-1 or more who will make surprise runs to a green jacket. Anyone betting on these longshots could make it big. You can only see the model’s PGA picks here.
