The creators of Netflix’s time-traveling sci-fi thriller Dark, Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese return with another mind-melting adventure. This time it’s a historical mystery/horror set aboard a doomed ocean liner.
1899 follows a ship of hopeful European immigrants heading to America. Even before strange events begin, they all seem to be trying to get away for a darker reason. But things really falter when they spot another ship in the distance.
Emily Beecham (Hail, Caesar!) in the leading role, with Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, Maciej Musiał, Anton Lesser and Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen in other roles. Many of the actors will speak in their native language, which was very important to the creators.
“We felt that given the decline of Europe in recent years, we wanted to set a counterpoint to Brexit and nationalism rising in different countries, to go back to this idea of Europe and Europeans working together and creating something together,” said Friese Meeting.
“It was very important to be true to the cultures and languages, we never wanted to have characters from different countries, but everyone speaks English,” Friese added. “We wanted to explore this heart of Europe, where everyone is from somewhere else and speaks a different language, and language shapes so much of your culture and behavior.”
1899 is scheduled to premiere later this year.
