With only 16 years skater Alysa Liu is already on her way to making history after winning the bronze medal in the World Figure Skating Championships 2022. Liu won a medal for USA after 5 long years when Ashley Wagner won silver at the 2016 championships. Yet Liu’s road to greatness has not been easy, with particular challenges emerging over the past four years.

Looking back at the tender age of 13, Liu had already made history by becoming the youngest champion ever US Women’s Figure Skating Championships. She was already destined to be great and was expected to definitely compete when she achieved senior level eligibility in the sport.

Liu won a second US title in 2020, even claiming victories on the Junior Grand Prix circuit. But things soon took a turn for the worse.

When the pandemic struck, Liu’s life changed drastically. Not only has she had two coaching changes, but she has also had physical growth and a ton of injuries. Suddenly, skating became a burden. According to Olympics.nbcsports, she said: “I’ve lost my motivation. I hardly went on the rink and didn’t do any off-ice (training).

The opportunity soon presented itself as the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games resulted. But instead, things got a little more complicated. When a coaching change occurred, she was pulled from her home and comforts in San Francisco and had to move to Colorado Springs for training. The disaster continued as she was forced to withdraw from the 2022 US Championships after testing positive for Covid.

However, she made her way to the Beijing Olympics, where she and her father were allegedly targeted by spies from the Chinese agents. Still, Alysa Liu was the most successful American to finish the figure skating program, placing seventh. She recently won the 2022 World Figure Skating Championships in France.

“I came to this competition without thinking about medals, just wanting to do good programs for myself.” Liu said. “When I saw that I had a medal, I couldn’t believe it. I don’t know how I got the motivation back. I have no idea how I got to this point.” She added.
