15 Thoughts on The Spartans 15 Spring Exercises – The Athletic

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Fifteen Thoughts on Michigan State’s 15 Springtime Practices.

1. There has been a lot more excitement surrounding the state of Michigan this spring than there has been in recent years.

At a school like Michigan State, basketball often dominates the headlines in March and April, and with good reason. But there was a healthy appetite for football this spring. The fanbase is engaged, and that speaks to the direction the program is taking under Mel Tucker’s staff.

And it makes sense, doesn’t it? Michigan State is bringing back a good number of starters from a competitive team. There are new players from the transfer portal. MSU will add plays from a recruit class that ranks in the top 25 for the first time since 2017 and will look to surpass that in 2023. All of this follows an eleven-win season highlighted by a New Year’s Six Bowl win.

I left the press box to join the crowd at Spartan Stadium on Saturday just to get a feel for things. The crowd was larger than I expected for an extended spring training session in less than ideal weather and I’m sure many were at home watching it unfold. Everyone wants to know what Michigan State will do as an encore in 2022. While there are still more questions than answers, this spring has revealed a lot about this team and some of the pieces it will rely on to try to repeat or surpass. last year’s success.

2. This is Payton Thorne’s football team.

Michigan State fans got a good look at Thorne on Saturday, more so than in a normal spring environment. You could see him work quarterback drills, take the field with first-team offense, and settle into that team as the undisputed starter without looking over his shoulder.
