smartzune I would like to introduce to you some of the most horrible and dangerous beauty and fashion trends that not so long ago people used to apply, despite knowing the risks.
1. Foot-binding in China (960 – 1912)
Foot binding was a beauty custom practiced by Chinese women from the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279) until 1912 when it was officially banned. During that time, women will bone bend over their feet to fit them inside these traditional lotus shoes about 4 inches (10cm) long. The custom starts between the ages of 4 and 9 and girls usually wrap their feet in bandages daily for about 2 years to get the feet to the desired shape and size.
2. Kayan women’s necklace in Myanmar (11th century – present day)
The Kayan women of Myanmar began to wear heavy Copper coil around their necks from the age of 5 and as they get older they add more rings. Each woman must carry a total of 11.5 kg in the necklaces. Despite popular belief, the coils do not actually lengthen the neck. They actually deform and push down the collarbone creating the illusion of a longer neck. This custom is still followed to this day.
