Runic Games, the developers of torchlight and its superior sequel, Torchlight IIperhaps had the best chance of surviving in the shadow of Diablo. The studio was founded by Travis Baldree, creator of Fateand Max Schaefer and Erich Schaefer, the co-founders of Blizzard North, and the main cast Diablo. That is, the top three ARPG developers in the world.
Where the original (and fantastic) torchlight was housed in a single, massive, ever-lowering tower, Torchlight II The setup has been vastly expanded, with multiple overworld hubs and a much more detailed campaign. And how Titan Quest before that offered us the rarest feature of the Diablo-like: color.
It’s a bright and happy game World Of Warcraft-style chunky cartoon art with a huge variety of enemies to destroy. And frankly, it’s pretty perfect at executing the format. What it doesn’t do, like almost every other example of the genre, is take this format to a new location. But if you are looking for that Diablo– Like at its absolute pinnacle, there really is nothing better than playing the game created by the people who invented the genre.
(And yes, I definitely recommend this over the recently abandoned one Torchlight IIIthat after a tumultuous eight years of varied development, often in an attempt to create an MMO, eventually came out as a kind of wet detonator.)
